DETAILS:
The First Annual Michigan State University Bioblitz and Herp Survey

WHO: MSU Herpetology Club, MSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club, and MSU Fisheries and Wildlife Graduate Student Organization

WHAT: MSU Bioblitz and Herp Survey (Saturday, April 23; 6:00am-4:00) – For the last five years, the MSU Herpetology Club has held their annual herp survey (herp is a term for amphibians and reptiles) to scour the campus’s natural areas to look for the amphibians and reptiles that call MSU home.
This year, the MSU Herpetology Club has teamed up with the MSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club and the MSU Fisheries and Wildlife Graduate Student Organization to expand this event to be an all encompassing bioblitz.
This event is meant to engage people of all ages in exploring what occurs on campus. This event includes mist netting for wild birds *(Mist Netting is when ornithologist use thin nets to capture bird species to band, research them and release them unharmed! 6am-8am) and small mammal trapping (9am-12pm) at Fenner Nature Center with MSU professors and graduate students, exploring the campus’s many natural areas to look for amphibians and reptiles as well as bird watching through the day (9am- 12pm; 1pm-4pm). This event is a FREE event open to the public. Each of the clubs will provide experts in the field so the only requirement for participants is a sense of adventure and curiosity.

WHERE: The early session for bird mist netting from 6am-8am will be at Fenner Nature Center, which is located at 2020 E. Mt. Hope Ave. in Lansing (at the corner of Mt. Hope Ave. and Aurelius Rd.). The two later sessions (9am-12pm; 1pm-4pm) will be at the Commuter Parking Lot next to Baker Woodlot on MSU’s campus **(at the corner of Mt. Hope Ave. and Farm Lane).

WHEN: Saturday, April 23, 6am-4pm. Participants can choose to participate in all sessions or just a few. General registration and orientation will be between 8am-9am, and then groups will separate to go to various areas around campus and Fenner Nature Center. Scheduled times & places of events are subject to change after 8am, please register to join

WHY: It’s a great way to get outdoors, learn about nature, and support all of the clubs involved as well as Fenner Nature Center. Participants can see the amazing amount of animals all around East Lansing.

“We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” -Aldo Leopold
