As tradition for the Fisheries and Wildlife club, on November 21st, we have our Harvester's Banquet! The Harvester's Banquet is a wild game potluck style event, where students, faculty and professionals are welcome to talk and eat. Attendees can bring dishes to pass, with the focus on wild game or natural foods. Not only will there be delicious food, but it is also a chance to meet professionals and faculty. We will be having a 50/50 raffle during the event, as well as handing out awards for best and most unique dishes.

The banquet is on November 21st, from 6 to 8pm in Room 221 of the Natural Resources Building on Michigan State's campus. Tickets are $10 at the door, but if you bring a dish to pass, the price will be knocked down to $5. Tickets include entry into a door prize drawing and beverages. We please ask you to bring tableware.

We hope to see you there!MSU Fisheries & Wildlife Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16386972657687683283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3281327858557934248.post-25511873631268475052013-03-02T15:47:00.002-05:002013-03-02T15:47:59.904-05:00Conclave T-Shirt Design!

At our last club meeting, a vote was made for the design specifics of the T-Shirt that we want to see for Conclave. The winning design, created by Theresa Geelhoed, is pictured below. The shirt, at this time, will be green, with a white printing for the image. The back will have all of the event sponsors listed. We are always looking for more sponsors, and more help with the Conclave planning committee! If you are interested, email Carrie at msufwclub@gmail.com for more information.

On Tuesday February 26th, we had an awesome outreach day at Marble Elementary School. This was an fun chance to teach younger students in the community about the natural world around them.

Liz Brajevich organized the event in accordance to Marble Elementary's Community Learning sessions for their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classes. We had the opportunity to educate the students on life cycles of organisms, by showing them a worm bin, as well as presenting different artifacts from different species; including some of the pelts we have, as well as some skulls and the preserved Hawksbill Sea Turtles.

The volunteers that were at this excellent event did a great job getting the kids involved and interested in the nature and science. Never thought we would see so many young boys and girls overly excited about playing with a bunch of worms!

The Michigan State University Fisheries and Wildlife Club took part in the 2013 Meeting of the Michigan Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. The meeting was on February 19-21 in Gaylord Michigan. The FW Club was able to send 4 members to this meeting.

It is very important to note that the MSU FW Club has just become a Student Subunit of AFS fairly recently, and this was the first AFS meeting that we have had the opportunity to attend as a subunit. It was a great experience to learn about different case studies in fisheries management, hear about a lot of the research being done by current grad students from all across the state, and meet many professionals within the field. After several hours of listening to presentations, there was a great opportunity to network during the social events.

The MIAFS 2013 Raffle, held in conjunction with the annual meeting in Gaylord, was hosted by both the Michigan State University and the Lake Superior State University Student Subunits of the MIAFS. This was the first year that our Subunit was involved with the raffle, and it was very successful for both schools. Some the items procured by both Subunits include a custom-made flyrod and reel combo, a canoe trip for four on the Pine River, tackle boxes, an Ice Auger, hand tied flies, and so many more items.

We hope to continue keeping our Subunit active with engagement and involvement with fisheries. With recent participation with the Park Lake Ice Fishing Derby, as well as future plans for a Hatchery Field Trip, and a possible long term research project on the Lake Dynamics of Park Lake; we are sure to give LSSU a challenge for the AFS North-Central Division's Most Active Student Subunit Award.

The MSU FW Club volunteered at the Park Lake 4th Annual Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, February 16th, 2013. With the weather in our favor, there was about 6" of solid, great ice, out at Park Lake in Bath Twp. The Derby had over 60 participants total, including youth and adults.

We had originally planned to help the Kalamazoo Outdoor Club kids with their fishing, but since they were unable to make it out at the last minute due to the weather, we primarily spent the day out fishing, and measuring the fish caught for the Derby.

With the assistance of Dr. Hayes, we measured and took scales from all of the fish caught that were in the running for the Derby. It was a great experience, and an excellent event. We look forward to participating again next year, and hopefully we can work with the Kalamazoo Outdoor Club then.

In celebration of the discoveries and life of Darwin, the MSU Museum hosted the spectacular event of Darwin Discovery Day this last Sunday. This event was quite the success with over 590 visitors and 120 curators/volunteers! All of the MSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club members volunteering did an excellent job at being ambassadors for MSU and the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.

On January 26th, several MSU FW Club members braved the cold to do some wood duck box work in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources out at Rose Lake.

It is really important to maintain wood duck boxes when they are put up, to ensure that they are safe for ducks, as well as to ensure that they will be successful for next nesting season. After repairing any damages, removing old nesting materials to add fresh wood shavings, we did work on a total of 19 different wood duck boxes in several different locations throughout the Rose Lake Wildlife Area.

We did find a few interesting things in the boxes to make note of!

-Two different screech owls in two different boxes

-A very stubborn lazy raccoon in one box

-Feathers of a Red-winged black bird, most likely from previously nesting in the box

-Many many successful duck boxes with egg shells and fluffy down!

We've been working hard at comprising opportunities, finding activities and planning fun and exciting meetings to keep everyone excited and engaged in the club, and at times it can seem like we're inundating you with information. We want to make a better effort at making information available to you in many places so you can find what you're looking for or catch up on what you missed.

First things first, the Fall camping Trip is one of our most anticipated events. We are a professionally-minded organization, but what's the harm in having a little fun as well? We look at this trip as the first real opportunity for members to catch up with one another and meet new folks. Attending is the best way you can get to know each and every one of us, so we hope you decide to come. If you're fuzzy on the details, see an E-board member or check to make sure you're receiving e-mails, as we will communicate most information that way.
***this trip is for dues paying members only. We want to stress that we hate to exclude anyone and this is one of FEW activities that are exclusive to dues paying members, however it is important that the club makes money in order to host events, plan field trips, keep the cost of transportation down and to provide the delicious ice cream sundaes and other snacks that we all enjoyed last week. We appreciate your support and hope that you will consider becoming a dues paying member.

Next up, weekly meetings are the time we use to introduce you to new ideas, connect you with potential employers and plan our activities. Classes sometimes conflict, and we hope that if you can't make it to meetings that you feel like you can participate in other ways. If you see or hear about something that happened at a meeting or want to get more involved in planning events and serving on a committee, please e-mail us and we will do our best to get you there. A side note about committees, this is a great way to hone your skills in developing research projects, planning communications and outreach activities, managing private lands and just overall planning and execution. This is something we encourage you to get into and to put on your resume, as many of the things you do in committees are valuable skills.

Lastly, our club is very active...we do an absurd amount of work and have a lot of fun doing it. There are a lot of dates and times to keep up with, details to remember, opportunities to be aware of so we encourage you to use all of our resources (which are linked on this website). We have a facebook page, a google calendar and this blog in addition to the reminders at meetings and emails that you may see. So please check these sites often to find information.MSU Fisheries & Wildlife Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16386972657687683283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3281327858557934248.post-19069135960317060202012-04-05T10:36:00.001-04:002012-04-05T10:36:22.318-04:00TWS Conclave 2012TWS Conclave is a mere 8 days away, so in light of that we wanted to make sure everyone was prepared. We will try to group people together once we have a list of tents. Keep in mind, you may still bring your own, but space is limited. Additionally, main meals will be provided, however you may want to bring snacks for in between meals. Lastly, the Club has not yet determined what amount will be avilable to fund Conclave and reimburse for gas. As of now, plan to spend around $50.00 for gas.
It is that time of year again. The time when the waters of Michigan are icy cold and the undeniable urge to jump head first into them is eating away at all of us. For those who aren't sure what I'm referring to it is the 2012 POLAR PLUNGE!!! <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

Each year, the Special Olympics, through partnership with local law enforcement raise funds by enlisting members of the community to take the plunge. For those individuals with the right amount of crazy and the ability to secure the $75 in donations required, a deep icy blue body of water is presented for their plunging enjoyment. All proceeds raised by "jumpers" benefit the hundreds of Special Olympics events and activities taking place in the coming year.

The DNR has contacted our club with an opportunity to clean out wood duck boxes at their Rose Lake station. Initially, it was planned to have a work day this upcoming Saturday 1/21. Due to thin ice at the lake, the event has been postponed with an alternate date of Saturday 1/28. With the erratic weather we've had, this too will depend on ice conditions. Phil at Rose Lake will notify the club by next Thursday as to whether we will move forward with the cleaning on 1/28. Please keep your ears open for announcements. If you have signed up to participate, you will be notified via text or e-mail as updates become available. MSU Fisheries & Wildlife Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16386972657687683283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3281327858557934248.post-62672174596934599052012-01-17T21:42:00.004-05:002012-01-17T21:56:11.711-05:00Pheasants Forever Fundraising OpportunityPheasants Forever of Lansing has invited our club to volunteer at an upcoming event.
